Summer Red Maple
Summer Red Maple (Acer rubrum 'Summer Red')
A fast-growing shade tree that puts on a color show nearly year-round. New leaves emerge burgundy-red in spring, mature to a dark purplish green through summer, then shift into yellow, orange, and purple tones each fall — giving it far more seasonal interest than a typical shade tree. It forms a naturally symmetrical, compact canopy and needs little pruning to stay attractive.
The broad, oval canopy provides ample cooling shade through the warmer months, making it a great fit for lawns, streetscapes, and smaller residential yards where a full-sized shade tree might be too much.
Growing conditions: Best in full sun with slightly acidic, well-draining soil, and tolerant of both pollution and wet soil conditions — a forgiving choice for a range of yard conditions.
